What do we need to be ready for piano lessons?
#1 Parents! Yes, we need you!
♥️Love Music🎵
Parental involvement is super important. If you play an instrument, or sing, or dance, etc., be an example and share with your children how much you love music and how consistent practice pays off in getting to do something that you love, well! Maybe you haven't learned an instrument but you love to watch music based things. Invite your children to watch with you. Look for concerts, musicals, recitals, TV programs, etc., that are age appropriate (and so many around here are free). You can enjoy a concert for 15 minutes, then go and get ice cream! If children see you genuinely loving music, they are likely to respond by loving music too.
Attendance & Practice
Parent-led home practice is expected for students ages 3-12. You will gradually pass on more and more responsibility to the child as he/she ages and becomes more capable of self-motivation and discipline. Parent attendance at lessons is required for ages 3-5, and strongly encouraged for ages 6-12, at least until the parent is familiar with how to lead practice at home. We need you to be creative and positive with home practicing. If you need ideas, I'd love to chat with you and help any way I can.
By the time students are 12+, parents will need to encourage and support the student in establishing a practice habit. Eventually passing on more and more responsibility to the student as he/she becomes proficient in self-motivation and discipline.
Ages for parent attendance are "in general" and will discussed on an individual basis.
Record player, tape recorder, CD player, mp3 player, phone, tablet, Amazon Echo, etc... whatever it is, your child will need to have a way to listen to music; both the music being studied, as well as in general. And they will need to listen lots!!
Parents: this is your job! You get to be the one to turn on the music. It can be focused listening, but most often it just needs to be quietly playing in the background: during breakfast, homework time, car drives, bedtime routines, etc. This will make a huge impact on how quickly your child learns the pieces.
Other things needed...
Instrument
You are going to need a piano (preferably an acoustic and in-tune piano) to practice on, as well as a bench/chair at the proper height for the student, and a footstool appropriate for the student. Proper placement at the piano is important and should be maintained at home where the student will actually be playing the piano the most. At our first few lessons, we will go over options for what you can purchase or use from home.
Grand Staff Music Studio uses the Vivid Practice App for making and tracking assignments. This tool will be very important and super awesome in guiding your home practice. You will need a tablet or phone capable of supporting the app (Android or Apple) and your child will need to have access to this device at lessons and for practice time at home. The app subscription is included in your annual registration fee and your teacher will provide you with your log in information at your lesson.
Binder
The Grand Staff Music Studio piano binder:
This is included in your annual registration fee.
Each student will need this binder regardless of level
This binder will be provided for you in your first few lessons.
Music Books
Books requirements will differ according to the individual student's needs. All the music books needed for the year will be included in your annual registration fee. You will not have to hunt for anything. ;)
Books that students will need may include:
A method book. My default choice for beginners is the Suzuki Piano School Volume 1 International Edition: book and CD, but it may be that another method might be better for your child.
Reading books
Supplemental repertoire books
Theory books/manipulatives
